Self-inquiry is finding out the ‘Self’ which is hidden by the illusory universe, in which we exist.+

Self-inquiry is finding out the ‘Self’ which is hidden by the illusory universe, in which we exist.

By inquiring ‘Who am I?’, the ignorance will not vanish. Without getting rid of ignorance, the Advaitic wisdom will not dawn. Without the Advaitic wisdom, it is not possible to realize the truth, which is hidden within the world in which we exist.

That is why Sage Sankara says: ~ VC-63- Without causing the objective universe to vanish and without knowing the truth of the ‘Self’ how is one to achieve Liberation by the mere utterance of the word Brahman? — It would result merely in an effort of speech.

Sage Sankara says ~ “What is accepted without a proper inquiry will not lead a person to the final goal. On the contrary, such acceptance will result only in evil, in something detrimental to our spiritual progress.

Sage Sankara says the transparent truth of the Self, which is hidden by the illusion is to be attained through the instructions of a knower of Brahman, (Gnani).

Remember:~

Bhagavad Gita: ~ “You must first see the ‘I’ as illusory before you see others as illusory. ~ CH.2 v.16

If you hold the ‘I’ as reality then you are unfit to acquire Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana.

People think ‘I’ is the product of the mind, but they fail to recognize what is this ‘I’ supposed to be an actuality.

Different people have different ideas about ‘I’.

First, know what ‘I’ is supposed to be in actuality.

The Soul does not change; all the changes are merely an illusion created out of the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.

As you go deeper in self-search you will realize the fact that ‘I’ itself is an illusion.

The ‘I’ appears and disappears but the Soul, the witness of the ‘I’ witnesses the coming and going, of the ‘I’.

People think if one inquires ‘WHO AM ‘I’? then ‘I’ disappears.

How can the ‘I’ disappear?

The ‘I’ is the basis of the world in which you exist. Without the ‘I’ the worlds in which you exist cease to exist because 'I' itself is the universe.

The world has appeared along with ‘I’ and disappears along with the ‘I’.

Just because some Gurus propagated glorified the ‘I’ it does not mean it is final.

That is why Bhagavad Buddha said: ~ “Believe nothing because a wise man said it, Believe nothing because it is generally held. Believe nothing because it is written. Believe nothing because it is said to be divine. Believe nothing because someone else said it. But believe only what you yourself judge to be true

There is nothing that exists prior to consciousness. The ‘I’ cease to exist without consciousness. The Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness, is the ultimate truth or Brahman or God in truth.

That is why Bhagavad Gita: ~ “The permanent (consciousness) is always there, only the transient ‘I’ comes and goes. (2.18)

Discard the ‘I’ as illusory by realizing the Self is not the ‘I but the Soul, which is present in the form of the consciousness.

Rest in the consciousness by realizing the world in which you exist is nothing but the consciousness.

The Soul is the fullness of consciousness without division of the form, time, and space. Thus, consciousness alone is real and eternal all else is merely an illusion created out of consciousness. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar

Sage Sankara also said the study of Upanishad was neither indispensable nor a necessary prerequisite for attaining the human goal, the moksha.+

Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana cannot be surmised by merely reading the Vedas and Upanishads.

Ashtavakra:~There is no wisdom whatsoever in the scriptures-just a collection of words.

The seeker should not bother about finding the meaning of what is written in the scriptures.

The seeker of truth should not become attached to words as being in perfect conformity with meaning because Truth is not in the letters.

The words and their discrimination bind one to the duality; meaning stands alone and is a guide to non-dual awareness. Meaning is attained by much learning, and much learning is attained by becoming conversant with meaning and not with words; therefore, seekers of truth have to avoid the sticklers for particular words.

A donkey with a load of holy books is still a donkey. A person who mastered scriptural knowledge is still a scholar, not a Gnani.

Sage Sankara cautioned that the study of Upanishad alone would not lead to moksha. In the matters of such as spiritual attainment, one’s own realization was the sole authority and it cannot be disputed

Sage Sankara also said the study of Upanishad was neither indispensable nor a necessary prerequisite for attaining the human goal, the moksha.
Sage Sankara pointed out; even those who were outside the Upanishad fold were as eligible to moksha as those within the fold were. He declared that all beings are Brahman, and, therefore, the question of discrimination did not arise. All that one was required to do was to get rid of ignorance (Avidya or duality).
The seeker's aim is the search for the Ultimate Truth or Brahman. The search to find the non-dualistic or Advaitic truth that in actuality never was lost, only hidden.
Upanishad aspiration is best expressed in the following sutra:~
OM Asato ma sad gaMaya, tamaso ma jyotir gaMaya , mrityor ma aamritaam gaMaya. Shanti, Shanti, Shanti
"OM Lead me from ignorance to truth, from darkness to light, from death to immortality. Peace, Peace, Peace" (Brhadaranyaka Upanishad (1/3/28)).
Upanishads are based on the insights of the sages and seers, serves primarily as a guidebook. One has to accept the Ultimate reality as Brahman or God.
The Sruti itself’ says:~ "This Atma is not to be attained by a study of the Vedas. (Katha Upanishad I, 2, 23.)
Sage Sankara says: ~
Aparoksh Anubhuti: ~
A. A 5~ Atman (the seer) in itself is alone permanent, the seen is opposed to it (ie., transient) – such a settled conviction is truly known as discrimination.
A.A 19. Atman is all consciousness and holy, the body is all flesh and impure; and yet, etc.
A.A 45. There exists no other material cause of this phenomenal universe except Brahman. Hence this whole universe is but Brahman and nothing else.
A.A 46. From such declaration (of the Shruti) as “All this is Atman”, it follows that the idea of the pervaded and the pervading is illusory. This supreme truth being realized, where is the room for any distinction between the cause and the effect?
A.A 47. Certainly, the Shruti has directly denied manifoldness in Brahman. The non-dual cause being an established fact, how could the phenomenal universe be different from It?
A.A 48. Moreover, the Shruti has condemned (the belief in variety) in the words, “The person who”, being deceived by Maya, “sees variety in this (Brahman), goes from death to death”.
A.A 49. Since all beings are born of Brahman, the supreme Atman, they must be understood to be verily Brahman.
A.A 50. The Shruti has clearly declared that Brahman alone is the substratum of all varieties of names, forms, and actions.
A.A 51. Just as a thing made of gold ever has the nature of gold, so also a being born of Brahman has always the nature of Brahman.
A.A 53. When duality appears through ignorance, one sees another; but when everything becomes identified with the Atman, one does not perceive another even in the least.
A.A 54. In that state when one realizes all as identified with the Atman, there arises neither delusion nor sorrow, in consequence of the absence of duality.
A.A 55. The Shruti in the form of the Brihadaranyaka has declared that this Atman, which is the Self of all, is verily Brahman.
A.A 56. This world, though an object of our daily experience and serving all practical purposes, is, like the dream world, of the nature of non-existence, since it is contradicted the next moment.
A.A 57. The dream (experience) is unreal in waking, whereas the waking (experience) is absent in the dream. Both, however, are non-existent in deep sleep which, again, is not experienced in either.
A.A 58. Thus all the three states are unreal since they are the creation of the three Gunas; but their witness (the reality behind them) is, beyond all Gunas, eternal, one, and is Consciousness itself.
A.A 59. Just as (after the illusion has gone) one is no more deluded to see a jar in earth or silver in the nacre, so does one no more see Jiva in Brahman when the latter is realized (as one’s own Self).
A.A 68. Atman, though ever pure (to a wise man), always appears to be impure (to an ignorant one), just as a rope always appears in two different ways to a knowing person and an ignorant one.
A.A. 87. Thus through ignorance arises in Atman the delusion of the body, which, again, through Self-realization, disappears in the supreme Atman.
A.A .88. When the whole universe, movable and immovable, is known to be Atman, and thus the existence of everything else is negated, where is then any room to say that the body is Atman?
A.A 96. The real nature of the rope being known, the appearance of the snake no longer persists; so the substratum being known, the phenomenal world disappears completely.
A.A 98. “And all the actions of a man perish when he realizes that (Atman) which is both the higher and the lower”. Here the clear use of the plural by the Shruti is to negate Prarabdha as well.
A.A 99. If the ignorant still arbitrarily maintain this, they will not only involve themselves in two absurdities but will also run the risk of forgoing the Vedantic conclusion. So one should accept those Shrutis alone from which proceeds true knowledge.
Even as particles of sand floating in water settle down when the water is absolutely steady, A person who has gained the Self –knowledge or Bramha Gnana or Atma Gnana of truth rests in the consciousness.
Sage Sankara: ~ VC In the dream state, even though there is no contact with the outside world, the Soul alone projects the entire dream universe of enjoyer, enjoyment, etc. Similarly, the waking state is no different. All this world of pluralistic phenomena is illusory projection.
The Upanishad has spoken of the sleep state at length. This has several purposes.
1. To reiterate that the objective world does not have a permanent reality.
2. To demonstrate that the subject alone remains as the non-dual reality in the sleep state and therefore in all the states.
3. To prove that the sleep state, being non-dual, gives the greatest bliss to the subject consciousness.
4. To prove to the subject-enquirer that bliss is obtained not from objects but on the contrary, in the absence of objects.
5. To prove that duality is samsara, misery and non-duality is liberation, bliss.
6. To give to the Sadhaka a? Preview? a foretaste, of the liberated state.
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.3.22 alludes to this experience: ~ (In this state a father is no father, a mother no mother, Gods no Gods, the Vedas or no Vedas. In this state, a thief is no thief, the killer of a noble Brahmana no killer, a monk no monk, a hermit no hermit. This form of his is untouched by good work and untouched by evil work, for he is then beyond all the woes of his intellect. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar

Your existence itself is the product of ignorance because the ‘Self’ is not you but the Soul.+

Q: K.M How every individual has own spirit or self when self is formless spaceless and also how is spirit is in ignorance and we have to finish the ignorance to get Self-realization

Santthosh Kumaar:~ The Soul is not limited to an individual. The individuals are many, but the Soul is one. The individual exists within the universe. The Soul is the cause of the universe and it itself is uncaused.

The Soul is not within the human body. The universe is created out of single stuff. That single stuff is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness. Thus, whatever the universe contains is bound to be the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.

Like an ornament made from gold is Gold, which is born out of consciousness is consciousness. Like gold is the permanent thing, in ornaments made of gold, similarly, the mind, which is in the form of the universe is born out of consciousness, is consciousness in its essence.

There are no separate individual Souls. Individuals are many but the Soul is one.

Many Souls theory is a dualistic theory. All the dualistic theories are egocentric.

Egocentric theories are based on ignorance. Ignorance is the cause of experiencing the illusory world as a reality.

The Soul is not an individual because the Soul is present in the form of the consciousness is ever formless, timeless, and spaceless existence.

The Soul is present in the form of consciousness. The Soul is the formless, timeless, and spaceless existence.

The Soul is the cause of the universe which contains the whole of humanity. Thus, limiting the Soul to an individual is erroneous.

Sage Sankara asks his opponents "How do you know there are separate individual Souls? Have you seen the Soul of a man? You can only say that you have seen different bodies. To say more is to misuse language. Therefore, I call you liars unless you give proof, which is impossible.

The Soul, the ‘Self’ is in the form of consciousness without the division of form, time, and space. The form, time, and space are merely an illusion created out of consciousness.

The Soul, the ‘Self’, is the fullness of the consciousness. In the cloud there is nothing other than the water, so too the consciousness is nothing other than itself. The consciousness is absolute without a second.

Remember:~

Your existence itself is the product of ignorance because the ‘Self’ is not you but the Soul.

You are an individual. Your existence is limited to form, time, and space whereas the Soul, the Self is not an individual because it is a formless, timeless, and spaceless existence.
Realize the Self is not you but the Soul with a firm conviction then the ignorance vanishes itself. The world in which you exist is the product of ignorance. The ignorance will prevail till you hold the Self as the ‘I’.
Discard the ‘I’, which is the cause of the ignorance by a perfect understanding of ‘what is what’.
From the standpoint of the Soul, there is neither bondage nor liberation. There is but one pure consciousness.
The Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness, is the only reality in which everything exists, to which everything belongs, from which everything has emerged, which is the cause of everything that exists in ignorance.
Thus, there is a need to realize the Self is not you but the ‘Self is the Soul, which is present in the form of the consciousness. The world in which we exist is nothing but consciousness.
When the matter is an illusion created out of the Spirit then Spirit alone is real.
When the object is created out of the subject then the subject alone is real.
When the world in which you exist created out of consciousness then the consciousness alone is real.
Reality and unreality are created out of single stuff because the unreality (the world in which we exist), is experienced as a reality we are unaware of the reality hidden by the unreality. There is no second thing that exists other than the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness. The dualistic illusion, which is present in the form of the ‘I’, hides the truth.
Stick to reality by mentally dropping the unreality.
The form, time, and space are created out of single clay and that single clay is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.
Realize the Soul which is present in the form of the consciousness alone is real all else is an illusion.
Consciousness is the only reality in which the universe exists, to which the universe belongs; from which the universe has emerged, which is the cause of the universe and which itself is uncaused. Thus, the universe is nothing but consciousness. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar

Yogic paths are nothing to do with ultimate truth or Brahman or God in truth.+

Sage Sankara in the commentary to "Brahma Sutras:- " "The highest beatitude is not to be attained by Yoga." (Sacred Books of East Series page 298 Vol.1.)

Yoga is not the means to Self-realization.  And yogic Samadhi is not non-dual Self-awareness.

Yogic paths are nothing to do with ultimate truth or Brahman or God in truth.

The scriptures are nothing to do with ultimate truth or Brahman.

Gurus, swamis, and yogis are nothing to do with the ultimate truth or Brahman.

The experience of birth, life, death, and the world is nothing to do with the ultimate truth or Brahman.

Personal God is nothing to do with ultimate truth or Brahman.

Karma or Action is nothing to do with the ultimate truth of Brahman.

Creation and creator is nothing to do with ultimate truth or Brahman because the Soul which is present in the form of consciousness is formless, timeless and spaceless existence.

Remember:~

Yogi may see a hill in his Yoga, but how does he know that hill is Brahman?

Sage Goudapada’s rational exposition of Advaita: ~ Whatever is seen, whether external or internal, whether by the ordinary persons or yogis, is unreal
First of all, you must give the meaning of Brahman!
A madman can say, “This rock is an elephant.” So until he defines an elephant we cannot say what he means.
It is no use seeing the personal God everywhere. You must see the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness everywhere, and then you will be able to treat the world in which you exist as consciousness.
First, you must know what God is supposed to be.
There is a clear-cut idea in the scriptures, what is supposed to be God. And what not to worship in place of God then why worship the belief in the religious idea of God, which not God.
That is why Lord Krishna Says Ch ~V: ~ “Those who know the Self in truth.". The last two words (tattvataha) are usually ignored by pundits, but they make all the difference between the ordinary concept of God and the truth about God.
Bhagavad Gita: ~ Brahmano hi pratisthaham ~ Brahman (God) is considered the all-pervading consciousness, which is the basis of all the animate and inanimate entities and material. (14.27)
Rig Veda: ~ The Atman is the cause; Atman is the support of all that exists in this universe. May ye never turn away from the Atman the Self. May ye never accept another God in place of the Atman nor worship other than the Atman?" (10:48, 5)
In Yajurveda – chapter- 32:~ It has been said that God Supreme or Supreme Spirit has no ‘Pratima’ (idol) or material shape. God cannot be seen directly by anyone. God pervades all beings and all directions. Thus, Idolatry does not find any support from the Vedas.
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad: ~ Brahman (God) is present in the form of the Athma, and it is indeed Athma itself.
People, who worship the belief in the religious idea of God, are hallucinating that they become one with such God.
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad:~ "He who worships the deities as entities entirely separate from him does not know the truth. For the Gods, he is like a pasu (beast)". (1. 4. 10)
Bhagavad Gita:~ All those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires, they worship many gods. (7- Verse -20)
Vedas itself says: May ye never accept another God in place of the Atman nor worship other than the Atman? Thus, to know the real God, Self-realization is necessary. Self-realization is God-realization. Self-realization itself is real worship.
Bhagavad Gita says ~ “Don't unsettle the minds of ignorant by revealing the esoteric truth."
Bhagavad Gita says: ~ Among thousands of men, scarcely one strives for perfection; and of those who strive and succeed, scarcely one knows the ‘Self’ in truth. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar

Following religious Gurus and yogis is like blind men led by the blind.+

The religion blocks one from realizing God in truth because religion is based on myth whereas Spirituality is based on the truth.

The Advaitic wisdom of Sage Sankara is nothing to do with religion, caste, rituals, worship, yoga, and other practices. Therefore, an obvious disparity between Sage Sankara‘s path of Gnana and the path of Karma. Path of Gnana is meant for the advanced seeker of truth and the path of Karma is meant for an ignorant populace.

Religious Gurus and yogis dwelling in ignorance, but wise in their own conceit and puffed up with their dualistic mythical knowledge.

Following religious Gurus and yogis is like blind men led by the blind.
The Self is the non-dualistic awareness without the ‘I’. The ‘I’ is the dualistic awareness.
When the seeker Inquiry into the nature of the ‘I’ then he will realize the ‘Self’ hidden by the illusory ‘I’. The ‘I’ itself is the dualistic illusion or Maya.
When the ‘Self’ is not ‘I’ or ‘you’ but the ‘Self is the Soul then what is the use of saying I am not the body, I am not the mind, I am not this or I am not that. What is the use of saying ‘I AM THAT’ without knowing what the ‘Self’ is in actuality?
Without knowing the truth of the Self, without realizing the truth of the world in which you exist it is impossible to realize the truth hidden by the illusory form, time, and space. By a mere utterance of the word ‘I AM THAT', the truth will not be revealed.
Advaitic wisdom or Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana is nothing to do with the ‘I-centric' or You-centric’ Gurus and their teachings.
Remember, the ‘I’ is not an individual because the ‘I’ is the whole universe. Limiting the ‘I’ to individuality is the cause of experiencing the dualistic illusion a reality?
The nature of the ‘I’ is the nature of the mind.
The nature of the mind is the nature of the universe.
The nature of the universe is the nature of the waking.
The nature of waking is the nature of the illusion.
Thus, it is necessary to study the nature of the ‘I’ to unfold the mystery of the universe.
All the teachings limit the ‘I’ to an individual and glorify the ‘I’ without knowing what this ‘I’ supposed to be in actuality. All ‘I’ based teachings are inadequate and useless for the serious seeker of truth.
If you are seeking truth nothing but the truth must discard without mercy such teaching in order to progress in your spiritual quest.
The seeker must know the ‘I’ is not limited to individuality. The seeker has to see the ‘I’ as the universe, in order to overcome ignorance. When the Advaitic wisdom dawns, then the ignorance vanishes.
When ignorance vanishes and the dualistic illusion (world) you used to think as reality becomes unreal. : ~

Every seeker of truth must bow his head with gratitude to Sage Sankara for his priceless treasure of Advaitic wisdom.+

Every seeker of truth must bow his head with gratitude to Sage Sankara for his priceless treasure of Advaitic wisdom.

Sage Sankara’s thought gave a new dimension to philosophy. He established the Advaitic wisdom as the true source of light.  Sage Sankara put reason and discretion at the center stage and he pushed the orthodoxy away from the path of wisdom.

Sage Sankara is therefore relevant even today. He values reason, encourages the spirit of inquiry, gives credence to subjective experience, and therefore to freedom of one's thought and expression.

Sage Sankara ushered in a new way of looking at the universe in which we exist. By soulcentric and egocentric view and judgment of the universe, one has the yardstick to realize ‘what is the truth? And ‘what is untruth?’.

He implores the seeker to recognize the essential unity of all beings and their oneness with the infinite space-time continuum. He explained, the Universe is the manifestation of the Supreme Being.

Sage Sankara talked about the infinite and formless timeless and the spaceless nature of the Soul, the Self, it was not in the sense of endless duration, but in the sense of completeness, requiring neither a before nor an after. When he referred to the unity of Self he was not talking of putting two things together, but he used the term to mean the utter absence of all plurality in the Soul, the Self.

Sage Sankara gave credence to an individual’s subjective realization. He placed the personal realization of the truth beyond the form, time, and space above all the other means of cognition.

Sage Sankara is the final authority on Advaitic wisdom. Self-realization is very simple. We make it complicated by mixing diverse theories, different teaching of different gurus different ideologies, religion, and yoga.

Remember:~
All our accumulated knowledge is the greatest hindrance in pursuit of truth. To realize the truth beyond the form, time, and space, one must have the courage of Buddha. Buddha got enlightenment only after dropping the religion, Vedas, and the concept of God.
To realize the simple truth there is no need to go from one mountain to another, one Ashram to another or worship the Godmen or Guru as a God, or converting from one faith to another. The truth is universal. Anyone can realize it if has an intense urge.
There is no second thing that exists other than consciousness. In the world in which we exist, all our thoughts, words, beliefs, experiences are nothing but consciousness. Realizing the consciousness is everything, is truth realization or Self-realization or God-realization.
Remember:~
Yoga Vasistha:~ "Teachers, interpretations of sacred texts, the force of religious merit--none of these lead to the realization of that Ultimate Truth which is revealed in the clear reflection of the Self, engendered from contact with Gnanis."
Sage Sankara: ~ ‘Reality can be realized only with the eye of understanding, not just by a scholar. What the moon is like must be seen with one's own eyes. How can others do it for you?"~Vivekachoodamani
Remember:~
It is impossible to find and realize the ‘Self’ through ‘I-centric gurus and their teaching. The seeker has to use his reason (Buddhi) in order to realize the truth hidden by ignorance. the ignorance is present in the form of the ‘I’.
Bhagavad Gita: ~ “You must first see the ‘I’ as illusory before you see others as illusory. ~ CH.2 v.16
Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana is nothing to do with the ‘I-centric' or You-centric’ Gurus and their teachings.

All the teachings which limit the ‘I’ to an individual and glorify the ‘I’ without knowing what this ‘I’ supped to be in actuality.
